What is beast of the east?
Every year, your favorite Golden Bear Ruggers travel to Portsmouth, RI to take on other schools in the mighty tournament that is Beast of the East. This is the largest collegiate rugby tournament on the east coast, including over 100 teams from as far away as Maine and Washington DC. This tournament spans an entire weekend, and we need your help to fund transportation, lodging, and food for 22 rugby players.
Not only is this tournament a place for us to make a name for ourselves as a team, it is an amazing team bonding experience that helps to bridge the gap from teammates to brothers.
Who are we?
My name is Mike O'Brien. I have been a member of this team for 3 years as a player, 2 of those years as the Match Secretary for the team. Being a member of this team has had an incredible influence on me and has shaped my college experience and I have had the privilege of attending Beast of the East for the last two years. Each year this tournament has brought this team closer together as well as solidifying us as a competitive team in the northeast.
Founded in 2009, Golden Bear Rugby began as a group of motivated students who had to travel off campus just to practice and compete. Over the years, the team has gained many more opportunities through the help of the Student Activities Office; but we are still a completely self-funded team.
We need your help to make this tournament happen!
Where will the money go?
The trip to Beast of the East is an expensive one. Housing, feeding, and transporting an entire sports team for a weekend, as well as paying for tournament registration is not an easy task.
Even with the help of this campaign, it is anticipated that each team member who wants to go will have to contribute upwards of $50 of their own money in order to participate. This is on top of their $350 annual dues and $50 annual USA Rugby membership fee.
- Tournament registration will be the first item paid by this campaign, buses and hotel fees will then follow
- If our target is met, players will only have to contribute $50 of their own money towards this trip
- If our target is exceeded, the money can be used to help fund our trip next year, as it is an annual event
